The Great Courses Plus

The Great Courses Plus

Are you looking for a genuine education? Like the History Channel before Ice Road Truckers and Pawn Stars took over?

The Great Courses Plus was the result of my search for authentic online learning.

The Great Courses Plus, called the “Netflix of Learning,” is a comprehensive and interesting online learning platform. It has a huge number of college-level courses, all of which are shown in short video and audio clips.

In this review of The Great Courses Plus, I’ll go through how it works, how much it costs, and how three courses — The Black Death, The Everyday Guide to Wine, and What Einstein Got Wrong — compare and contrast. I’ll also include a list of my favorite and least favorite aspects of the platform.

Is it worthwhile for you to purchase The Great Courses Plus?

What is The Great Courses Plus, and how does it work?

The Great Courses Plus is an online learning platform that lets you watch college-level courses on your computer, mobile device, tablet, or smart TV.

The Great Courses have been in existence for several decades. The Great Courses started out as a course catalog where you could order audio and video courses to be shipped to you. You get the idea. VHS, DVD, etc.

This catalog is still available, and it is from here that The Great Courses Plus was born.

The Great Courses Plus is a subscription-based streaming platform that takes The Great Courses’ best and most popular courses and makes them available to you. You pay a monthly fee in exchange for having unlimited access to courses.

Update on the Great Courses-Wondrium (Rebrand)

The Great Courses Plus will be renamed Wondrium in April 2021, and the company has agreed to new licensing agreements with Kino Lorber, MagellanTV, and Craftsy, as well as with Wondrium.

How many courses does “as many as you’d like” imply?

There are almost 9,000 lectures across 700 courses. That’s a lot of college-level information at your fingertips.

These courses fall squarely under the “learning” category. Some online education platforms, such as Masterclass, emphasize artistic capabilities, while others, such as Skillshare, emphasize hard skills like Python.

The Great Courses Plus is primarily focused on obtaining a liberal arts education.

Each course includes 10–20 video lessons (each lasting around 30 minutes) as well as a large PDF textbook (between 100 and 200 pages).

There will be no quizzes, essays, or tests. Just reading and watching!

The Great Courses vs. The Great Courses Plus: What’s the Difference?

The Great Courses Plus is the subject of this review.

The parent company, as I mentioned earlier, is called The Great Courses. It served (and continues to serve) as a catalog for original filmed college-level lectures.

Yes, you can still buy lecture DVDs for $35-$500 per class on Amazon. But that’s a bit costly.

If you’re anything like me, you’re more interested in The Great Courses Plus, their streaming platform.

The Great Courses Plus is a membership service that makes all of the hundreds of fantastic Great Courses lectures available for streaming. It’s a lot more cost-effective, as we’ll see later in the study!

What I’m trying to say is that these are two different platforms. They have webpages of their own. It’s not like other learning sites, where you can buy a single session or subscribe to a series of classes.

The Great Courses Plus website is where you go if you want the subscription model.

Who can benefit from The Great Courses Plus?

The fantastic courses Is it really worth it?

The Great Courses Plus is an excellent learning platform for those who want to take deep dives into a variety of topics.

This platform is for you if you want a 12-hour lesson on the Black Death.

It can be binge-watched in the sense that you can watch the lectures in order, but you won’t be able to finish a class in an afternoon. However, you could easily finish a class in a week!

It’s a great resource for a focused learner who wants to get a comprehensive, in-depth look at a variety of topics.

It’s similar to podcast learning in this manner. If you enjoy listening to podcasts (such as The History of Rome), you’ll enjoy The Great Courses Plus.

If you liked college lectures, you’ll love this platform because these courses are exactly that: college lectures. You won’t receive a certificate or a degree when you finish, but you will have a larger knowledge base.

Finally, if you’re searching for a no-frills learning environment, The Great Courses Plus is a good choice. If the thought of homework, discussion pages, and uploading assignments makes you nauseous, The Great Courses Plus is the course for you.

It’s self-paced and doesn’t require any extra activities!

Who is it not intended for?

If you’re looking for a more immersive learning experience, The Great Courses Plus might not be for you. There are no interactive features, such as a discussion board, social media groups, or a homework feature. Lectures and textbooks are the norm.

If it bothers you, you won’t enjoy The Great Courses Plus.

If you’re searching for a quick fix, The Great Courses isn’t going to satisfy you. These are in-depth classes that typically span six to twelve hours. The standard is thirty-minute lectures. Prepare to sit through typical lectures with little or no engagement from the rest of the class.

If you were expecting famous instructors, Q&A sessions, or lessons focused on hard skills like coding, The Great Courses Plus is probably not for you. This is a platform that emphasizes college-level courses delivered in a lecture-style format.

What are the subjects covered by The Great Courses Plus?

Finance and Economics:

Features that are unique to you.

Wine and food.

Nutrition, Fitness, and Health

History as a pastime and recreation

Language and Literature:

And there’s music!

Religion & Philosophy

Personal and professional development

Young Learners’ Programs

You can browse the hundreds of courses available by selecting one of these categories. You have the ability to study algebra! Learning Latin is something you can do! You can study screenwriting, thermodynamics, and a variety of other subjects.

While there is a strong emphasis on college-style courses (such as Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Science), there are also skill-based classes available, such as screenwriting and French 101.

The Great Courses Plus is thus more comprehensive than other online education sites. Professors teach these courses, which are at a higher level of learning.

These are longer commitments because each lesson might last anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. They’re probably the closest thing any learning platform has to true lecture-based learning.

What are the names of the instructors?

On The Great Courses Plus, there aren’t many big-name lecturers. Instead, the instructors are usually academics with advanced degrees. When you check your professor’s bio, you’ll notice that they frequently teach at a university.

Professors are not all teachers. Professional chefs, for example, teach the breadmaking courses. However, the level of knowledge doesn’t change. All of these teachers have been thoroughly checked and have a lot of experience teaching or working in the field.

You’re not going to get a writing lesson from Neil Gaiman (for that, see MasterClass), but you’re also not going to get a low-quality class from some guy who knows how to code (on Udemy, this can happen).

Instead, you’ll be assigned to a professor. It’s like going to college.

What is the structure of a class?

Classes are straightforward.

By clicking on a category on the categories page, you can select a class. You’ll then be taken to the course welcome page, where you’ll find a brief description of the class. There are a couple of tabs beneath it: Your Professor, Lectures, and the Course Guidebook Share courses and ratings.

If you want to get started, simply go to the lecture tab and click on the first lecture. That’s all there is to it!

If you wish to go over any of the information you learned in your lecture again, you can click the handbook option, which will open an in-browser PDF (as opposed to the downloaded PDFs you get on MasterClass). These PDFs aren’t simply flyers; they’re pretty long and in-depth. They’re more akin to textbooks than anything else.

The “share course” tab allows you to post that you’ve been taking the course (rather than just the course itself) on social media, which is The Great Courses Plus’s only social media link.

Finally, there is a review page that allows students to post course reviews. You can leave comments on other people’s reviews and see what other reviews they’ve posted by clicking on their profiles.

The cost of the great courses plus

The Great Courses Plus comes in three different price ranges, depending on how often you pay, how long you pay, and how much you pay at once.

If you pay monthly, the cost is $20 every month, for a total of $240 per year.

If you pay quarterly, the cost is $45 per quarter, for a total of $180 per year.

It costs $150 if you pay annually.

So, if you’re willing to pay annually in advance, you’ll save $90, which is a 35% discount.

I like the variety of plans available; it’s a pleasant contrast to some of the more rigid subscription models.

So, what exactly do you get for your monthly fee?

Hundreds of college-level courses are available.

There are around 6 to 12 hours of video lectures in each course.

Each one includes a comprehensive PDF textbook.

There is a lot of content available, but you don’t have access to any discussion boards, communities, or other features like you would with other online platforms (like MasterClass or Mindvalley). This is solely a platform for sharing information.

This could be because The Great Courses Plus’ main population is significantly older and primarily interested in learning, according to my study. That isn’t to imply that this isn’t a platform for younger people-I’m learning a lot!

However, it is a platform that foregoes frills in favor of a focus on subject mastery.

Is it possible to buy a single course?

The Great Courses, not The Great Courses Plus, allow you to purchase a single course. It’s perplexing, because they’re actually two separate platforms. Although there is a lot of overlap in the courses they provide, you can’t buy a Great Courses Plus program alone.

Instead, you must purchase a subscription.

If you were to purchase a single lesson from The Great Courses, you could expect to pay anything between $35 and $500. The majority of classes aren’t $500, but many are in the $100-200 area.

Is this a good offer?

It costs $150 to join The Great Courses Plus on an annual basis.

Many of The Great Courses’ individual classes cost at least $200.

You’ll save money if you take at least one class a year through The Great Courses Plus.

It’s easy to become caught up in The Great Courses, which includes thousands of hours of top-notch lectures. If you take one class per month, you’ll have completed 12 in a year. That’s around 144 hours of schooling, or a little more than $1 per hour.

Is there a free trial for The Great Courses Plus?

Yes! There is a free trial available for The Great Courses Plus. It lasts for 14 days and offers you full access to the platform.

That’s how I first became aware of the platform. I was intrigued but unsure whether I wanted to pay for a subscription, so I decided to try it out for free.

It’s a great way to see if the platform is right for you.

What is the most appealing aspect of The Great Courses Plus?

The quantity of information The Great Courses Plus contains an unbelievable quantity of stuff. There are hundreds of classes, each of which contains 6 to 12 hours of lectures, giving you access to thousands of hours of college-level lectures. If you are a curious learner, there will be a course for you to enjoy.

The emphasis is on knowledge expansion. Many online learning systems are built on creativity or talent. That’s great! That isn’t a problem at all! The fact that The Great Courses Plus was knowledge-based appealed to me. These seminars cover topics such as the Black Death, Algebra, and WWII—true arts and sciences education! It was as if I had been given a breath of fresh air.

The trial period is completely free. A free trial is one of my favorite things. The Great Courses Plus offers a 14-day free trial so you can see if the platform is worth the money.

There are several subscription choices available. Flexibility appeals to me. You can join The Great Courses Plus on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, and the higher levels offer discounts. This adaptability was really appreciated.

There aren’t any unnecessary extras. The focus is on education. This is a platform that allows you to view lectures and read textbooks at the same time. Why fix something that isn’t broken?
