Khan Academy

Where can you go to learn—not just how to handle an issue right now, but how to enhance your understanding of a topic or begin learning something from scratch—on the internet? Khan Academy is the best site to learn about most academic subjects. Khan Academy is a free online learning site that offers course content in disciplines such as math, science, art history, and others. The lessons have videos, readings, and interactive parts. They are organized in a way that allows you to start at the beginning of any subject and build your knowledge over time.

The site announced in July 2020 that it would focus more intensely on kindergarten through early college courses, and that materials outside of that scope would be retired. Khan doesn’t offer programs in music, music appreciation, or foreign languages, for example, so there are some minor omissions from the material collection. It does, however, provide classes in Spanish, French, and Brazilian Portuguese to speakers of other languages. To put it another way, you can take Algebra I in Spanish instead of English. More language support is in the works. Khan Academy is the greatest learning site for academic subjects and is an Editors’ Choice pick because of what it offers and the fact that it is completely free to use.

Check out some of the other sites we’ve examined for non-academic learning, such as professional development or developing creative talents. MasterClass, for example, is a source of inspiration and in-depth knowledge in a few specific disciplines, such as cuisine, filmmaking, writing, and athletics, among others. LinkedIn Learning is a terrific resource for professional development, whether it’s soft skills like leadership or hard skills like Photoshop (formerly Lynda.com). Skillshare has a lot of videos that teach you how to do a lot of different kinds of creative things, both for work and for fun.

What Is Khan Academy And How Does It Work?

Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, began training his cousin. Khan worked as a financial analyst at the time. To explain different ideas in mathematics to his cousin, he filmed movies of a virtual chalkboard with voice-over narration. He started uploading these videos to YouTube.

Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization that cultivates academic courses and makes them freely available online, came out of this notion over time. Khan Academy is still known for its strengths in math, economics, and finance, and it has worked with other institutions and educators to grow into other subjects.

What are the subjects covered by Khan Academy?

Khan Academy is aimed towards pupils in the United States of America’s educational system. At various grade levels, many of its courses adhere to the established curriculum.

Khan Academy covers science and engineering, computing, arts and humanities, test prep, college prep, career prep, and English language arts, in addition to math, economics, and finance. The majority of these topics have their own courses. You can take Precalculus, US history, and an LSAT prep course, for example. There are no restrictions on how many courses you can take.

In a mobile app called Khan Academy Kids, there are also materials for young learners ages 2 to 7. An iPhone app, an iPad app, and an Android app are all available. There are courses in English language arts and arithmetic that correlate with school years for kids in primary school, such as Second Grade Math.

AP classes are another example. Advanced Placement, or AP, is a program in the United States that allows students to take courses in high school that count toward their undergraduate degree if they qualify. In other words, students can take a university course without paying for it, and they will receive college credit if they pass a standardized exam at the end. The AP courses offered by Khan Academy prepare students in a certain subject area, but they must take the formal test wherever it is offered; they cannot take the test or obtain final credit through Khan. Meanwhile, Coursera offers free college courses from Yale and other top colleges.

The Khan Academy is making progress.

Khan Academy, thankfully, still offers classes for learning to code. Introductions to computer programming topics such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and even video game development are available. The classes contain instructional videos as well as built-in tools for practicing coding on the site.

You can also engage in student discussion boards provided you have an active, confirmed account. While there is no live phone conversation, Khan Academy’s support page has tools for students and parents, as well as community-sourced tips and tricks. However, when compared to dedicated coding classes, Khan Academy’s coding curriculum is restricted. If you wish to go beyond these introductory lessons, we recommend Treehouse and Codecademy, our Editors’ Choice recommendations for premium and free coding courses.

As previously stated, Khan’s price and availability

Academy and the organization that manages it are both 501(c)(3) nonprofits. To provide a free, world-class education for anybody, everywhere, the organization’s mission states. As a result, Khan Academy is completely free. To access the lessons, you don’t even need to create an account or sign in.

You can keep track of your progress in several classes and access additional services if you create an account and sign in. One of these added advantages is giving a teacher, tutor, or parent access to your learning history and allowing them to provide tasks or assignments to you.

What Is Khan Academy And How Does It Work? The video

lectures, brief readings, interactive quizzes (typically multiple choice) and comment threads are the foundations of Khan Academy. When you register for a course, you gain access to all of the video lectures and other resources in that course, which are presented in a logical order. A course usually consists of modules that feature lessons that contain videos, readings, and quizzes.

In many cases, the order in which courses and units are presented is important since you must first master foundational skills before moving on to more advanced material. Courses in mathematics are a wonderful example. You may, however, skip ahead if you already possess a particular talent. In some courses, it may be more practical to jump right into the information you want to study or review rather than go through each lesson one by one. If you already know a lot about the First Amendment to the US Constitution, for example, you could skip to the second.

Some educators may argue that Khan Academy’s use of the term “course” is misleading. It’s a phrase that’s used by both accredited universities and more informal learning environments. Khan Academy’s courses are a collection of learning materials. Some of the courses may have teachers that respond to comments, but when you enroll in a course, you will not be assigned an instructor who will provide you with customized attention. Similarly, you don’t have any official classmates or a deadline by which you must complete the content. Khan works at his own pace.

When it comes to AP courses or even test prep, Khan acts more like a book on the subject than an individualized lesson. Khan Academy may be used in the same way that a SAT prep book can be used to discover techniques for passing the exam and view examples of questions. The Khan, on the other hand, is both free and interactive.

The Learning Process

The experience of following along with Khan Academy lectures and classes differs depending on the topic matter and who is presenting it. Sal Khan, the site’s founder, hosts some of the films because they were the site’s initial inspiration. Those videos established the overall tone and style.

The courses on retirement accounts in the personal finance course are a good example of Khan’s style. In these videos, Khan writes a few notes on a virtual blackboard while he speaks. You listen to him describe the differences between a standard IRA and a Roth IRA, for example. He sets down the figures: the principle investments, how much interest they yield, how much someone would pay in taxes on those accounts (and when), and any costs they would incur for early withdrawals when he gets into the details. It’s akin to having a teacher and a blackboard, except that the teacher isn’t visible.

There is no need to sign up for Khan Academy algebra.

The tone is pleasant and straightforward. Khan frequently writes down what he’s just said and then repeats it. This teaching method may be boring for certain students. Others may consider it a benefit because it allows the learner to pause and process the material.

Sal Khan did not create all of the materials in the personal finance course; instead, he relied on contributions from others. Better Money Habits, for example, includes a text as well as two short videos. The substance of these videos has a more commercial feel to it, yet they are not promotional.

Sal Khan’s past experience as a financial analyst makes him an excellent source of economic and mathematical information. When it comes to humanities subjects, Khan Academy, on the other hand, frequently relies on other experts. The British Museum, for example, has an art history lesson about Islamic art, as does TED Ed. UNESCO also has an art history lesson about Islamic art. Khan Academy helped make some videos with the help of professionals in the field who were brought in to help.

Mastery points from the Khan Academy

Quizzes and Gamification

As you proceed through the material, the site keeps track of your progress. It records the number of minutes you spend viewing video lessons, reading texts, and taking quizzes. The more you learn, the more mastery points you get, as well as badges for hitting specific milestones.

There aren’t quizzes in every course, but those that do have a lot of them. You’re almost certain not to see the same questions if you take a short quiz with only four questions and then retake it later on the same day.

Some Negatives

Some disciplines, such as foreign languages and music, are absent.

It uniquely caters to the educational system and needs of the United States.

Best for Free Academic Learning

Khan Academy is a dependable and extremely effective academic learning resource. While Khan is geared toward kids in elementary school through college, anyone with a desire to study can profit from it. However, it doesn’t cover everything. It has courses for most of the basic academic disciplines that US students are required to learn, except for foreign languages.
