Coursera is a popular online learning platform, but is it any good in 2022?

If you’re considering taking an online course, you’ve certainly seen a lot of positive feedback about Coursera, as well as offers to enroll in your first class.

There are a lot of good things about this online school, but is this one of them?

Before enrolling in a Coursera course—or any other online class, for that matter—it’s critical to understand how the platform operates and what you’ll get in return.

We’ll look at the following and more in this comprehensive Coursera review:

By the conclusion, you’ll know whether Coursera is a good fit for your next online course or whether you should search elsewhere.

What Is Coursera And How Does It Work?

Coursera is an online course platform that partners with some of the world’s greatest universities to provide online learning.

There is a wide range of online training, from short courses (also known as Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs) to specializations in certain fields and online degrees, which can be taken from home.

Coursera’s faculty are top-tier university professors, ensuring high-quality instruction. Because Coursera is used by some of the world’s most well-known companies for employee training, you can be confident that you’ll learn the skills you need. There are videos, text, downloads, and quizzes to make sure you understand what you’re learning.

Course Catalog on Coursera

Starting in the course catalog is where you should start looking for a course on Coursera. This includes university-accredited certificate and degree programs.

Coursera offers different types of courses:

Basic Course: Simple, self-paced, peer-reviewed courses with a Coursera certificate at the end.

Specializations: A set of courses that are meant to help you master a certain job skill and include practical assignments.

Professional: Job-specific training to assist you in gaining experience or preparing for industry certification.

Certificates: Real-world projects are part of courses that can help you get a job and earn an online degree.

Modular Degree Learning: You can get your degree from the comfort of your own home and at your own pace.

Each listing has a colored label to help you see which type of class it belongs to at a glance.

On Coursera, you can learn about a variety of topics.

When you look through the Coursera course catalog, you’ll realize there’s a lot to choose from.

Courses in the arts and humanities, sciences, business, information technology, languages, personal development, and more can be found in the catalog.

Each core subject is divided into subtopics, resulting in a plethora of course alternatives. There’s an online learning program for you, whether you want to study health and wellness or computer algorithms.

Many of the topic areas offer both single courses and whole degrees, and the course listings page will show you which courses are part of a degree program.

Most language courses are taught by institutions in the country where the language is spoken.

In case you’re not sure where to begin, course listing pages contain popular and trending courses, certificates, and programs.

Where Can I Find the Best Courses on Coursera?

Coursera has fantastic on-site filtering capabilities, which is one of my favorite features. These allow you to choose your ideal course in just a few clicks. Skills, job title, level, language, kind, and author can all be used to narrow down the courses displayed.

Another nice benefit is that taking a Coursera course is not limited by language. Many of the English-language courses include subtitles in a variety of languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and others.

This information, as well as specifics on how to use it, is available on the course description page.

Once you’ve discovered a course that interests you, click the link for further information.

The partner institution (typically a university or organization) is included at the top of the page, along with the number of reviews, the number of students enrolled, the average time commitment necessary, and an overall course rating. All of the courses had at least a 4.5-star rating.

You can also look at the schedule of classes. Each segment is divided into weeks, with a suggested completion time for each. It also indicates which films and materials will be discussed each week.

While most courses have a suggested start date, you can change the sessions and deadlines to fit your schedule.

You can look up the course instructor’s profile by clicking a link further down the page. This part, in my opinion, could have used a few more details.

However, there were links to follow for further information.

Overall, Coursera does an excellent job of presenting you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about which course to take.

However, you may find the course description page to be a little too long.

How Is A Course In Coursera?

One of the most important issues is, of course, how much this high-end online instruction will cost you. Well, the price of Coursera varies a lot based on what you’re studying and how you’re studying.

On Coursera, you can audit a large number of courses for free. You will get access to the majority of the course materials, but you will not be graded or receive a certificate.

You can also take the graded version of the course and receive a certificate at the end. The majority of the courses we saw were around $100, but prices did vary.

Monthly subscriptions for specializations, which comprise numerous courses, are available and can quickly add up to courses that last many months (or depending on how long it takes you to complete the materials).

However, there is some good news: Coursera provides a seven-day money-back guarantee. This allows you to try out the entire course, including grading, for free.

So far, everything has gone well. But what happens when you actually enroll in a course?

What Is the Coursera Learning Platform and How Does It Work?

You can use filtering features discussed previously to look for a course. Though the filters for language, level, and topic were good, I would have liked to be able to match my choice to the amount of time I had.

The signup process was straightforward, and I enjoyed the option of a seven-day free trial. However, because entering my credit card information to access the trial was inconvenient, I decided to audit the course instead. Afterwards, I could buy a certificate for the course and get credit for that part of the specialization.

Coursera sent me many emails after I signed up. There were three welcome emails, one for the site and two for the course, in addition to an identity verification email.

Easy Calendar Integration for Time Management

After I was enrolled in the course, I had the ability to add course deadlines to my calendar. It was also obvious that I had the option of working at my own pace.

Course Organization: A Quick Overview

The course content was well-organized, with a left-hand column menu containing lessons, grades, notes, and comments. A welcome message from the course tutor appeared on the main page of the class, highlighting important things like where to get help.

The course’s estimated duration was displayed in a timeline interface alongside the weekly requirements on the overview page. The fact that the start and end dates were clearly stated appealed to me.

There was also an inbox for communication on-site. I was astonished to see a note there, but it turned out to be only a message from the course tutor, emphasizing the first lesson video.

Getting The Most Out Of A Coursera Course

The Marketing Strategy for Entrepreneurs course began with a two-question practice quiz to test your foundational knowledge.

This is useful for professors, but it also helps students become acquainted with how Coursera quizzes function.

You get an immediate grade when you finish a quiz, and there’s a handy button to take you to the next step.

You can mark each segment as complete and rate it with a thumbs up or thumbs down as you finish it. Then a request to continue on to the next item appears.

This was primarily video-based training. One feature I liked was that the course videos included transcripts. You can also mark sections of those transcripts and store them as notes in Coursera.

Additionally, within the course interface, you can make your own notes. From the main course menu, you may access all of your notes.

The course videos are brief and simple to follow. The discussion forums are a great location to find answers to issues that other students have asked about previously. Some, on the other hand, are more active than others. When I checked, it had been over a month since the last communication.

This course also contained peer-graded assignments, in which students assisted one another by evaluating their work. This looks like a great way to get students more involved and build a learning community for each subject.

Overall, the interactive videos, regular checks of what you’ve learned, and immediate grading appealed to me. And, once you’ve received a certificate, you can easily add it to your LinkedIn professional qualifications with a few clicks.

Is Coursera a Good Investment? When to Use It?

Is Coursera a good investment for online education? It is debatable. Although the cost of auditing courses is unbeatable (i.e., free), the cost of certification varies greatly based on your field of study.

Learners will like Coursera’s user-friendly course interface and class notes.

Coursera’s extensive course catalog, low pricing, and interactive teaching style make it an excellent choice for online learning and skill development. If you want my opinion, go ahead and ask! What do you have to lose?

The hallmark of Coursera is that it includes courses from top colleges and makes many of them open to anybody. To put it another way, you can access all of the lectures and reading materials from a real Yale University class for free.

Coursera also collaborates with other businesses to provide accessible education in a range of sectors. You can take free programs for personal enrichment or pay for a professional certificate, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree.

It’s never too late to improve your talents and education.

Coursera is a good online learning platform since it teaches you through videos, readings, quizzes, and assignments.

Coursera is simple to use and provides a wide range of skills for students of all levels.
